Visiting Southern Wisconsin
The Wisconsin season is heating up for the fun of the outdoors surrounding Lake Winnebago. The Heckrodt Wetland Reserve, five miles south of Appleton, creates Mayhem in the Mud in April and follows up in May with the Frogtastic Celebration. Seven miles south of Appleton in Neenah, spring brings the annual Antiques Showcast & Sales to the Tri-County Ice Arena. The community of Chilton, on the east side of Lake Winnebago, is home to the Friends of Ledge View Nature Center. The Chilton Nature Center is an ideal destination to enjoy a May morning bird hike or hiking through natural solution caves.
Festive community celebrations like the 29th Annual Sparta Butterfest make spring and summer travel through Southern Wisconsin fun and rewarding. Join the Festmaster, Lady Butterfest, and Miss Sparta for the 2013 Sparta Butterfest, June 6th through 9th in Sparta. A Fest Tent, Food Tent, and plenty of events make this an ideal festival. Don’t miss the Sunday morning parade and the free stage entertainment.
La Crosse, 30-miles west of Sparta on the upper Mississippi River Flowage, celebrates the Fourth of July at Riverfest 2013, July 3rd through 6th. Join family and friends for daily children’s games, the Bungee Trampoline, dunk tank, and arts & crafts. Lip-sync your way to the top at the Puttin’ on the Lips contest, or enjoy live entertainment on the Riverfest Main Stage, including headliner Cheap Trick.
Later in July the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway hosts the 2013 La Crosse Interstate Fair. Presented by the La Crosse Country Agricultural Society, the 123rd Interstate Fair is July 17th through 21st. Enjoy the excitement of the Speedway’s Burnout Contest & Shine N’ Show Contest, and the Fairtime Late Model 40-Lap Feature along with the fun, games, entertainment and exhibitions of the La Crosse Interstate Fair.
Bike Wisconsin presents GRABAAWR 2013, June 22nd through 29th. The Great Annual Bicycle Adventure along the Wisconsin River takes riders through the heart of Wisconsin including Mauston and Baraboo, with the finish in Prairie du Chien. GRABAAWAR is a challenging course for cyclist, however rewards with the spectacular scenery of Wisconsin’s heartland.
