Madison's Can't-Miss Sites

Plan a visit to Wisconsin and head for Madison. This capital city is home to a wealth of premier attractions and must-try adventures. From the culture and history, to the college town feel and excellent dining, there's much to try in Madison.

Museum Tours

Explore the Wisconsin State Capitol

Be sure to give yourself an extended weekend to explore all Madison has to offer. A great way to begin understanding Madison is with some museums tours. For those traveling with kids, the Madison Children's Museum is a sure bet – let the little ones venture out into the museum's Wildernest Area, or try the Cow Hoist.

The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art yields exceptional exhibits, and the Wisconsin State Capitol offers tours – make your reservation ahead of time if the group is larger than 10 guests.

College Life

Madison features an ever-present college feel – it's home to the University of Wisconsin - Madison so it's easy to see why. Established in 1848, UW-Madison is a public school and the official state University of Wisconsin, acting as the campus for the University of Wisconsin System.

Take part in a campus tour at UW and see top sites like the Music Hall, Bascom Hall, and the Grainger Business Hall and Conference Center. Sports fans will no doubt want to see Camp Randall Stadium, home of the UW Badgers football team, and the Kohl Center for all things UW basketball.

Care for a Drink?

Craft brewing is more popular than ever, and Madison is home to a variety of must-visit brewhouses. First thing's first – nominate your designated driver. Once that's settled, hit the town in Madison and be sure to show up thirsty. Don't miss Capital Brewery where you'll want to try their Supper Club Lager and Wisconsin Amber.

The One Barrel Brewing Company is another must-visit for beer fans. Because they sincerely only brew one barrel at a time, the selection offered is more limited, but the quality and care given to their brews is second to none. And just one more of the excellent brewery choices in Madison is Vintage Brewing

Outdoor Adventures

Plan your visit to Madison for spring or summer and take full advantage of the area's most exceptional outdoor recreation. Boaters are sure to visit Lake Mendota, with its 9,740 acres of surface area and near year 'round fun, it's a can't-miss. There are 10 boat landings, seven beaches, and anglers are known to land catfish, largemouth and smallmouth bass, and walleye.

Two areas yielding great outdoor fun for the whole family in Madison are the Olbrich Botanical Gardens, and the Henry Vilas Zoo. At the Olbrich Botanical Gardens, be sure to check out the Schumacher Library, and the Bolz Conservatory.

Catch a Show

Madison is home to a wide range of excellent entertainment. Live, Broadway productions, small art houses, movie theaters, and so much more help to make Madison a premier entertainment destination.

The Overture Center for the Arts is arguably the premier venue for live entertainment in the state. Throughout the year, The Overture hosts top performers, artists, and even hosts weddings. The Monona Terrace Convention Center is home to a slew of events, trade shows, expos, and galas.

Don't miss the State Street Entertainment District is home to more than 370 galleries, shops, dining destinations, and bars. Depending on the time of year you visit, you can also catch the Dane County Farmers' Market.

Local Eats

If you view food as more than just the fuel that gets you from point A to B, then be sure to check out these most exceptional dining options in Madison. Even if you don't consider yourself a foodie, these spots are still sure to make your visit to Madison just that much greater.

Opened in 2007, the Brasserie V is a "euro-focused beer bar" where you can taste treats made by chef Casey Trumble. The Flying Hound, just east of downtown Madison, features a menu with an essence of the English Channel, and a beer list with 32 unique craft beers. For the more down to earth eater, be sure to visit OSS – Open Serving Sausage. Find a variety of well-crafted sausages and creative toppings – it's not your average dog.
